In this episode, Emergence Coach Wendy Sloneker talks about your reticular activating system: the built-in system in your body that helps you hit the reset button. When you need to stop and refocus, give yourself a break, and work on the tone of your self-talk, reticular activation can give you a way to develop the skills for the positive self-talk you need.

You're listening to Emergence from Life's Biggest Obstacles with Wendy Sloneker. This is episode eight. Hi again, Hi again, welcome right back here into this moment, we've actually never left the right now, we've had moments in between for sure. But they've always been now, check out the meta, I totally just went there.
Alright, so as you all know, this is a new journey for me in emergence, as I'm discovering by leading by doing. Yes, so one of the things that I'm going to be asking you to listen with today is not just your ears. The message has to do with resonance, which is often not something that we experience in the mind. What Where are we going? Yeah.
So trusting what resonates or feeling a sense of is something I'd like you to just try on. Emergence as a journey is something to also just try on, this is also how you find out figure out get a sense of whether or not this podcast is for you, because we're only going to go deeper from here on in, not out or going in. So part of it is yes, figuring and, like getting a sense of whether or not this podcast is something you want to continue on with, for whatever reason, for any reason, like, if it feels good, if it sounds good, this part. But also like you experiencing, listening to yourself, getting in touch with what resonates. And this is one way of really discerning practicing discernment, but also getting a sense of your own trust for and of your inner voice, not the chattery one, not the loud one, not the screechie one, not the fifth gear or one, the one that is calm. It's sort of located in the center of your entire body and being and if, if you'd like, please listen for it from your being.
Wow, yeah, totally, totally, totally. The words that I'm saying yes, they are important, but really also honestly, it's about listening from a deeper part of your whole self, and not your body, not just going in through your ears. If you could listen with your solar plexus, or listen with your sacral your sacral area into your guts, what is the viscera? What is what am I listening with my listening with my whole self, you may go in and out of listening. This is totally reasonable. And it happens all day, every day.
Just notice this is the just noticing. Because what I'm finding in my own emergence journey is that trusting what is resonant and simple, like both of those ingredients, resonant, and simple, are really important. They're really important for me to cultivate and go back to continually consistently go back to a sense of groundedness a sense of spaciousness, a sense of protected newness, and I'm okay being exactly where I am at this moment in this right now.
Resonant and simple together aren't like the the equivalent of chocolate and peanut butter, right? I'm a child who I was a child in the 70s. And so that's sort of win the whole like person walking down the street advertisement with an open jar of peanut butter. And the other person collides who has a giant like head size bar of chocolate. You got your chocolate in my peanut butter, you got your peanut butter in my chocolate. Wow, they taste great together.
This is resonant and simple. Those two ingredients are the emotional chocolate and peanut butter equivalent. Apologies if you are peanut sensitive. However, I think you understand what I'm saying. If it's resonant and complex, that's going to require a lot more resources, a lot more time, effort, energy, focus. These are things that are yes, I'm financially free. However, energetically, they can be elusive, especially if you have a busy busy mind full of chatter, and painful self talk, I'm not even going to say negative, I'm going to say painful self talk.
If you have no resonance, but it's simple, then you might be being sold to. And this convenient, it appears to be easier than it might actually be. So if it's not resonating, like, allow that to be a no thank you. And good day, resonant and simple, just practicing like and it doesn't, it can be a flash of a second that you practice it you're going to know and trust that you are listening for and looking for resonance.
What are you using when you are trying this on trying these two ingredients on together? Looking for or shopping for what is resonant and simple? This podcast is one of those things you could also be looking at your next treat to eat your next piece of fruit, your next beverage, what is resonant and simple that the body says yes. And the mind, the quiet part of your mind says, Oh, yes.
What are we using when we're doing this in a flash of a second as we practice? Pretty much your reticular activating system? Yes, you are totally born with one it is free of charge for you to use. And it doesn't take much. It doesn't take much as I go forward and deeper into the submergence journey. Spoiler alert, we're going to be talking a lot about the tone of self talk.
And I want to use the reticular activating system more and more because it's easy, it resonates. And it's free, free to use, you have free will to choose to use it. I had an idea that was delivered to me less than a month ago. And it has to do with the reticular activating system. What is resonant and what is simple.
If you are in my weekly visits email group, you'll already know what it is I'm talking about, because that's where you get all the information first. You may be hearing the truck and some beeping in the background. Nothing has gone wrong. That is not the co2 or the fire alarm, that is a truck backing up. And my window was open because comfort and air are what I delight in, especially in the summer.
Okay, so back to the reticular activating system or the RAS it's, it's many times known as, and so much fewer, so many fewer syllables to just say out loud reticular activating system, the RAS. I used to love activity books, word search was really a big deal for me, as was coloring as is coloring. And I had this idea delivered this concept delivered less than a month ago. And it was resonant and simple. And it all came together beautifully to the point where I just published a paperback book on Amazon up to Amazon, it's print on demand. It's available now. Why? Why did I do this? What is it about this? Well, affirmations and encouragement have to do with self talk. And so when we're able to combine them both and then scan for relevant, resonant symbol words and phrases that actually lift our self talk and give us something else to put in our minds because honestly, through grief through loss when you are a high achiever or aspiring to be a higher achiever, sometimes we just don't have the energy or the spoons, the resources to to come up with the language ourselves. So this provides a lot of language. It includes the I am statement on every single puzzle.
So what's the idea here? If you notice that you're in some painful self talk, this would be one alternative that may help you get out of and refocus and reset and refresh your inner talk. So you have something else that is coming from the inside that is gentle, that is grounded that has come from me who you've heard a couple of times. And, and you have a resource that is pen to paper, which connects to the heart, it connects to the body, it gives your busy busy mind which may or may not be overwhelmed or anxious, or stressed. A break you using your reticular activating system to search for words and phrases that are positive and encouraging. And can shift how you actually begin to retrain or repattern your inner voice.
Yeah, it is that powerful. Trusting the simple and the resonant may be a skill set. But it's one that is easy to practice. But it's also kind of challenging sometimes to remember, if you're coming from like a big session of painful self talk. You can look at the cover, you can go into a puzzle. You know, the idea here is not that you lose your days and hours of productivity, it's that you get them back. It's that you get your days and hours of productivity back with a little bit of refocus, refresh, you can consider it a break, what have you do like three minutes of word search, and you suddenly have momentum, and energy for being right here right now and seeing what's next and resonant, and simple for you.
This is how we get our lives back. Simple tools that resonate, that are simple. You can look for them all over, you can certainly pick up this paperback, more are coming.
