We all have that little voice.
The shitty one.
The catastrophizer, the discourager, the mean one.
I trust (and empathize) that you are familiar and have heard yours...
It's relentless, debilitating, demoralizing... and a liar.
I say this based on experience.
Sooo real. So believable.
It doesn't give an inch toward possibility, imagination, or potential positive outcomes, does it?
I listened to mine for a loooong time... as in decades.
And my nervous system, moods, sleep, and relationships suffered for it.
It was mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically painful to be wound so tight and spurred by fear for so long. I had to do something.
Getting rid of the voice all together wasn't an option. I'd done a lot of research in attempting to find out how to do that... or at least turn the intensity down on that shitty voice (I came to know and call mine The Wraith).
An option came to me... I don't know how, but want to share it... I hired a character. A fictional character to step in on my behalf when The Wraith was too close and loud. An emotional bodyguard.
She is a warrior. And fairly well-known in the HBO-tv realm. I imagined that I had hired the character known as Brienne of Tarth from the Game of Thrones.
This character is always on the watch, is completely fearless, has gone head-to-head in a ring with a BEAR! (The Maiden vs. the Bear episode)... and she is the one I call forth when The Wraith becomes too believable and pernicious for me to focus on my work and life at hand.
This emotional bodyguard is big enough to take on that vicious voice so I can be in my body, move forward in my life. The scary things are scary enough as they are, right?
Who would you hire to guard against your voice that whispers "No, you'll never..." so ferociously, so believably in your ears?
Make a list... then make them an "offer"... and let them say "yes".
